Dwelling Certificates
Required for new Tenants
A dwelling certificate is now required of all new tenants in the City of Garfield. The application for the certificate may be obtained at the Garfield Fire Prevention Bureau in City Hall. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A dwelling certificate will be issued to the tenant provided a smoke detector inspection had been completed as required by NJAC 5:70-2.3 of the Uniform Fire Code. A smoke detector certification will cost $35. A certificate must be presented if a parking sticker is needed. This dwelling certificate is a requirement of all new tenants taking occupancy after April 1, 2007. It is not required of previously occupied tenants. Parking stickers issued to previous tenants will be renewed provided they can provide the proper documentation and they are already registered in the parking sticker system.
